The Job

The Programming Delivery Assistant will assist in the delivery of a programme of activities and events at the Castle, running on a daily, weekly, or seasonal timetable or as part of a changing event programme. These programmes will celebrate Newcastle Castle’s Spirit of Place and philosophy to create a connection with every visitor, every time they visit. The role will provide a variety of experiences to our visitors – from the provision of tours, co-facilitating self-led activities to bespoke engagement events. The role specifically assists with visitor enjoyment to progress the whole site visitor experience with the aim to consistently exceed our visitors’ expectations. The role sits within the Visitor Experience Team at the Castle delivering great service to visitors and promoting good communication across the site alongside joined up service provision. What you will deliver • It’s about ensuring our visitors have a great experience – You will deliver exceptional service. You will engage with visitors to the site by delivering and supporting activities and events which bring the Castle to life and provide high standards of interpretation and presentation. • It’s about growing the business – You will engage with visitors to get their feedback to pass onto the Visitor Experience Team and help to identify new opportunities to generate income. • It’s about making the link to our charitable purpose – You will ensure that visitors have the opportunity to understand and engage with our purpose through high quality interpretation and promotion of our work. You will participate in delivery of the activities programme. • It’s about looking after our resources – You will safeguard resources and equipment and assist in developing cost effective ways of working. • It’s about working safely and securely – you will comply with the Castle’s processes and procedures in order to minimise risk to the public, staff, volunteers, and contractors. You will follow clearly established routines such as occasional cash handling, till operation and rota requirements being in the right place at the right time with the right resources. • It’s about good teamwork – You will help to create a great sense of teamwork with your enthusiasm and supportive approach, working with other staff and volunteers to achieve our objectives and communicate our key messages to visitors. Scale and scope of the role Contract type – Variable hours, fixed term until 31st December 2026 Pay rate - £12.71 per hour Reports to – Castle Team Supervisor Financial responsibility – No budgetary responsibility held. Line management – No line management responsibility, may work alongside volunteers. Responsible for contributing towards effective team working with staff and volunteers within the Castle. Area of impact – Responsible for contributing to the delivery of the Castle’s wider visitor experience, programming, and interpretation; providing excellent and engaging interactive customer experiences. Nature of impact – Responsible for delivering high quality engaging activities to visitors. Assists in the delivery of events and other engagement activities at the Castle. May assist in the preparation of resources events and activities. Contributes to our visitor experience ratings and scores. Internal/external relationships –Regular day to day contact with visitors/stakeholders. Maintains good working relationships with the wider Castle team, understanding and supporting activities taking place across the site. Knowledge skills and experience needed • Demonstrable practical experience in and activities ideally in a tourist, heritage, art, theatre, or other relevant environment. • Strong verbal communication skills including public presentation and the ability to communicate in an engaging and informative manner with a wide range of people. • Experience of working with a wide range of audiences and assessing the needs of these groups in a responsive manner – particularly in relation to children, families and individuals with SEND.
